Hyperacusis and Tinnitus: Understanding Sound Sensitivity
Hyperacusis refers to reduced tolerance for everyday sounds that most people would consider comfortable. It can occur with or without tinnitus. Common examples include discomfort around dishes, traffic, children, public transport or amplified sound.
Hyperacusis is not simply good hearing
Sound sensitivity relates to how the auditory and nervous systems respond to sound, not just whether hearing thresholds are normal. Some people with hyperacusis also become increasingly vigilant about environmental noise.
Why constant earplug use may backfire
Hearing protection is appropriate around genuinely hazardous noise. However, wearing strong protection for ordinary safe environments can reduce everyday sound input and may reinforce the idea that normal sound is dangerous. Management should distinguish hearing conservation from unnecessary overprotection.
Management is gradual
Treatment may include education, carefully controlled sound exposure, tinnitus management when relevant, anxiety support and assessment for associated ear or medical conditions. The pace should be individualised, particularly when symptoms are severe.
